Hawk Spoon Rest

Design: The hawk silhouette is bare clay surrounded by a gold-dusted black glaze.

Story: I live in a rural, high-desert area where birds of prey rule the skies. I absolutely love watching hawks, eagles, and falcons soar overhead, and wanted this piece to capture an inverted silhouette - where they are normally a dark figure on a lit sky, here they are the natural white clay against a sparkling black background. 

Creation: Each spoon rest is hand formed on the potter's wheel. It is then fired at nearly 2000°F to fully solidify the clay.

Once fired, I design and apply a resist in the shape of Idaho-local plants or animals. Then glaze is hand-brushed everywhere except the bottom of the piece. When the resist is removed, it leaves a silhouette, creating a simple aesthetic that preserves the texture and color of the bare clay.

Care: Once complete, these pieces are microwave, dishwasher, and food safe.
