Elk Jar

This handmade stoneware jar is designed for those who appreciate the wildlife and wild places of the American West.

Hand-formed on the potter's wheel in rural Idaho, this jar features a hand-painted elk and mountain landscape within a stamped frame on white stoneware. The interior glaze has a combination of warm reddish-brown and forest green tones that remind me of seeing an elk running through the underbrush. The piece is coated in a glossy clear glaze.

Care

Hand washing is best practice for painted pieces, however, this jar is microwave and dishwasher safe (top shelf).

About this design

This piece was inspired by the elk that have kept my family alive for generations — that saved my grandfather from starvation during the Great Depression, and that bring me back to the forests every year in a pursuit as old as humankind. 

Words cannot express what is felt for an animal that has sustained your life. Gratitude. Reverence. Wonder. Awe...
It is a part of life that very few people get to experience or understand.

Every time I create or look at a piece like this, I am reminded of what it means to be alive. The plants, animals, water, air, and ecosystems that sustain us each and every day. It is both a great miracle and, I believe, a responsibility.

I am often asked what these lidded jars can be used for. Your imagination is the limit, but I recommend using them for: 

• Kitchen: coffee beans, loose leaf tea, cooking salt, spice blends, sweetener packets, cookies/candy, dog treats
• Bedroom: jewelry, crystals, hair accessories, love notes, charging cables, ear plugs, sleep masks
